The Jerusalem Syndrome – the psychotic, delusional phenomenon that is reputed to affect around a hundred pilgrims and visitors to the ‘holy city’every year – was adopted as a metaphor and curatorial thematic of the third Jerusalem Show. Jerusalem is imbued with the historical associations that have been invested in it and which have shaped it, where every stone is alleged to have spiritual meaning to the different faiths. It can be an overwhelming and trance-inducing experience for the travellers and pilgrims, with their already heightened sense of spiritual/religious awareness, who come in their thousands to visit its many iconic places of significance. In the year Jerusalem was the designated Arab Capital of Culture, the artists in the third Jerusalem Show turned their attention to contemporary aspects of the city: the surveillance and control, the divisions, the city as the focal point of imposed monolithic ideologies, activating their perceptions in their own interpretive ‘syndromes’, from poetic or performative to fictional and documentary ones.
