The fourth Jerusalem Show was symptomatic of much of the frustrations and ‘exhaustion’ with the greater political processes, the ongoing forces of occupation, but also with the deepening internal divisions and problems in Palestinian societies, the state of paralysis and the complete lack of progress in achieving anything resembling any real Palestinian autonomy – what Jack Persekian, in his curator’s essay for this Jerusalem Show, ‘Survival of the Fittest’, referred to as an “agonising and protracted decline”. In a cry against helplessness and docility, and for defiant cooperative action and mutual support, the artworks in ‘Exhaustion’ explored, indirectly and directly, aspects of the historical context and the contemporary one, the creeping sense of complacency and resignation, and the turn to the illusions offered by a neoliberal market economy. Meanwhile, Jerusalem itself, increasingly forced into being disconnected and isolated from the rest of Palestine, was being subjected to the full force of the occupiers’ insidious practices of control, discrimination and social engineering.
